Tractorfest #100

Today represented a great milestone in Tractorfest history as it was not only the 100th fest but also Tractorfest.s 12th consecutive year. Jerry was the early arrival and we ventured into the woods with Kelly and Medora. It was a cool rainy day; fog hung over the ground and lessened the visibility through the trees. Halfway up the main trail we went left into some small pine. Water splashed onto us when each tree was struck as we blazed a new trail. Eventually we crossed the stonewall and drove slowly over the bull. That was followed by a short neutral drop and a bumpy trip back to the road. We returned to the barn and lowered the transmission a bit to accommodate for the now wet v-belts. Back into the woods I cautiously approached the highway fence. In an attempt to cross, the tractor got hung up half way and the left snow chain fell off. Matt and Jeff arrived while Jerry departed and I walked to the barn for some tools. Once the snow chain was back on we pushed and lifted the tractor off the fence. Jeff, who was in the dump body to provide traction, jumped in the front seat to take it out of reverse. He engaged a forward gear to which the rest of us reacted by yelling "No" as the tractor was now headed back to the fence where it had just been stuck. Fortunately Jeff got it out of gear in time. After a bit more driving the snow chain was loose again so we returned to the barn. This time I deflated the tire before remounting the snow chain to get it tighter. At this point Brian arrived with Bridget and Andy. We set off into the woods with Bridget shotgun and ran over some dead trees after the steep section. Then we went to the top of the main trail to enjoy the pounding high speed descent. Brian was ejected from his shotgun position during an especially bouncy section. Kelly took over shotgun as we went baja through the thick trees to Chris and Matt.s path, over the stonewall, and back to the road to pick up late arrival Karen. With everyone in attendance we went to TV cliff to toss the waffle iron that I "found" during a bike race in Vermont. Andy made the first toss which broke it in half at the hinges. Bridget, Brian, Matt, and I followed, and Karen finished it off with the most breakage. As we returned to the main trail Brian rode shotgun and got whipped in the face by a fallen branch as we ran it over. Then Matt insisted that we try and knock down a large dead (standing) tree trunk just before the stonewall. We had to maneuver a bit so that the tree could be struck in a downhill direction. Everyone expected that the tree would stop the tractor cold but there was a bit of softness to the first impact. The third strike proved to be its last straw as the old roots broke free from the ground. The large roots came up under the front axle as the tree fell and lifted the front of the tractor a couple feet off the ground. Everyone found it quite amusing. A team effort freed the tractor as some pushed while others lifted the enormous tree trunk. It measured 17 feet long and 20 inches across at the base. The snow chain fell off again so the tractor was parked at the turnaround and we walked to the washer drier monument. Andy and I assisted Brian with a modification to the top of the drier. We returned to the tractor and Medora sat shotgun for the final bumpy descent of the day. The motor stalled as we crossed the road so Andy and I pushed it back to the barn to complete the first 100 fests.
