Kwanzaafest '03

12/27/03 Derek Albertelli, 'Count' Ethan Caless, Matt Ciampaglia, Medora Hackler, Jeff Hnatio, Brian Jones, Joe Sparks

This year's celebration of Kwanzaa started with some carburetor issues which were solved by a quarter turn of what I think is the high speed jet. Once the motor was running and the smoke had cleared, Joe, Matt, Ethan, and I ascended to the summit of Mt Tractor via the east side. This particular journey had not been made for some time leaving sections of the trail in need of 'maintenance'. Matt was ejected from his shotgun position during some particularly heavy maintenance. Jeff arrived as we removed the last fallen tree by hand just meters before the summit. At the top the tractor ran out of gas and we paused to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather for this time of year. Clear skies and no leaves on the trees allowed us to see into the distance. A few fallen rocks were stacked back onto the summit monument. We descended the west side and went to view the drop off which had not been driven in five or six years due to the dangers involved. But before I realized it we were on the drop off and everyone proceeded to bail except Joe (shotgun) and I. The tractor slid down the slope and fortunately I was able to avoid the tractor-stopping trees. Contact with a dead tree at the bottom of the slope broke the top two feet of trunk off which fell about 15 feet and landed on my head. Once everyone was back on we blazed a trail through some very thick ten foot pine and found Derek. Some more trail blazing brought us to a wet and rocky area near the main trail where I attempted to drive over a large rock that was positioned in between two trees. Despite there being a slope to the rock, the front end, transmission, and differential bottomed out at different points. The left rear wheel caught one of the trees preventing us from getting over and it took a couple minutes of effort to back off the rock. Eventually we returned to the yard and picked up a treadmill that Derek brought. Then we rolled strong to the washer drier monument and the right snowchain fell off on the way. The treadmill was used as appliance #3 in the construction of Tractorhenge. Rocks were carefully selected and stacked into the treadmill frame. After further discussions including the .Hnatio ratio. we ascended to the main trail and began the high speed descent with Derek sitting shotgun. Derek was ejected during the neutral drop section and eventually we got .railed. by a log in the path. It directed us into a stump which the tractor bounced off and stalled. Late arrivals Brian and Medora joined us for the remainder of the descent which included two extra trips through the mud to conclude Tractorfest 101.
