Matt was the first to arrive on the festmas '99 scene just as I finished remounting the snow chains. After more people showed up we went for a spin in the woods. The motor ran rough and the belts were a bit loose as we ascended the main trail. A wheelie forced us to unload a few passengers to continue forward progress on the steep section. We went baja through some small pine trees and went over the stonewall. The bull was dampened significantly by a log that fell across the trail so no one was ejected. Then we returned to the barn to lower the transmission and clean the spark plug. During a breif period of downtime, everyone enjoyed a game of toss the brick while final arrivals, Jeff and Joe, helped me with the tractor. We got it running again and the three of us made a break for the woods. Everyone else followed behind but we lost them because the tractor was running so much better. The tightened drive belts and "smooth" running motor allowed us to jet up the hill without using first gear. As we approached the turnaround we did some intense baja and ran over everything we could. Then we were stopped by a tree and Jeff took a wiz so the rest caught up. After restarting we went over the stonewall to TV cliff. A rotten pumpkin that someone brought was tossed off the edge. That was followed by a discussion about past fests and we decided to go to the summit of Mount Tractor. As we approached the stonewall in the uphill direction a large oak branch jammed into the transmission's front pulley. The branch quickly removed the drive belts effectively putting us in neutral and sent us rolling backwards down the hill. People walking behind were quickly alerted of the oncoming tractor so everyone was okay. Inspection of the damage showed a wobbly transmission pulley that needed new shims and reinstallation. Remounting the drive belts would not yield a moving tractor, so we pushed it uphill and over the stonewall to the main trail. Then it was lowered down the hill just like when we broke the drive shaft exactly two years ago (12/12/97). Festmas '99 was concluded prematurely.
